Congressman Ted Deutch

Congress Ted DeutchThe social studies department at Okeeheelee Middle School brought US Congressman Ted Deutch to speak to all seventh grade students on October 29. Mr. Deutch began the presentation to our seventh graders, all of whom are enrolled in Civics, with the “School House Rock” classic “I’m Just a Bill.”

The assembly was next treated to a simulation where the students had an opportunity to be a “member of the US House of Representatives” and propose legislation.  After coming up with quite a few ideas for bills (proposed laws) the Congressman chose eight students to debate the bills. Lastly, the students voted which bill would be the best use of the 1 billion dollars they were working on. The Warriors of Okeeheelee chose a bill that would invest the money in cancer research, an issue that is close to the heart of many Warriors.

We look forward to having more elected officials visit in the future so that the students can have a chance to take part in authentic learning experiences.
